Kindle DX with Global Wireless

Recently Amazon.com has introduced the
Kindle DX with Global Wireless – a new version of the 9.7-inch wireless reading device now with the convenience of wireless content delivery in over 100 countries. In addition to the features that have made the 6-inch Kindle the bestselling product across all of Amazon, the new Kindle DX with Global Wireless has a large 9.7-inch electronic paper display, auto-rotate capability and storage for up to 3,500 books. Kindle DX with Global Wireless is available for pre-order for $489 at Amazon.com and ships January 19.

While I now proudly own the 6" Kindle and it has brought me much pleasure in reading, the Kindle DX will be so good for my PDF files! While I was attending college through long distance learning years ago, buying college textbooks was a nightmare! The university later used PDF eBooks but having to read them on notebook/computer screens was too inconvenient. Now with Kindle DX (which is more suitable for displaying college eBooks I think - because of the bigger areas for illustrations) I may even return to college to do my Master's.

Kindle DX is also suitable for children's eBooks.

My New Amazon Kindle!

In late October, my Kindle arrived in HK! The joy was beyond words. It was a long wait since 2002 when I first started this eBook web site and had been wishing that one day, I would own a dedicated reading device that could allow me to read many books without the hassle of waiting (plus expensive shipping). That dream came true at last!

The package was elegant, almost tamper-proof, and very intuitive to set up! Since getting my Kindle, I've already ordered 10 books from Amazon.com and simultaneously reading them. I am bringing my Kindle everywhere I go! There will be no moment of boredom. Best of all, I am saving on space, saving lots on shipping fees (which could at times cost more than the book), being able to shop and download the eBooks instantly from anywhere, wirelessly, onto my Kindle.

Owning a Kindle even changed my reading habits! I used to only read non-fictions, but is now trying novels ... especially those being made into movies, like "Coco and Igor Stravinsky"! The movie sold out in HK, so I am getting the Kindle eBook version. More so, I'm buying more self-help improvement books which I will have second thoughts displaying on my physical bookshelves.

To me, owning a Kindle really means freedom, besides convenience. By the way, I got so many curious looks when reading in the train or other public places ... the Kindle reader is still a NOVELTY in Hong Kong.

Reading eBooks on iPhone

ebook page on iPhoneebook software for iPhoneTwo months ago I finally got an iPhone so that I could read ebooks while travelling. There were several eBooks software to choose from and I chose "Stanza" after reading the reviews.

The good thing about reading on an iPhone is the portability and convenience since it is a device I carry around everyday. However, the screen is way too small and the battery life is not long enough. But this is still the best option before Kindle becomes available in my country!

One frustration is the limited number of good books that I can purchase despite being able to access so many online ebookstores. There is nothing like being able to own a Kindle and accessing over 350,000 titles (many available in hardcopies too).

But on Oct.8, my dream is becoming reality! I read in the papers in my country that an international version of the ereader, Kindle, would be released. Wow, I have placed an order for one!

Reading eBooks on Blackberry

BlackBerry 8320 Curve Titanium Phone (Unlocked)
This picture shows a Blackberry Curve 8320. It's a lovely device to read email on and with Mobipocket reader installed, I am using it to read ebooks too! It's now the 8th day since I've had this device and spent about 20 minutes a day reading on it.

To preserve battery strength, I disabled the wi-fi and bluetooth. The device can then cover approximately 5 days without draining the battery entirely! As the words are very crisp (using font family BBClarity size 18), reading is a pleasure. The pictures/graphics are also rendered very well on the screen.

This is my first experience reading ebooks on a blackberry. Before that I wasn't sure if I would be used to the idea (as my old BB device could not be used for ebook reading) but I now found myself reaching out for my blackberry several times a day just to read on it. Also looking forward to buying more ebooks from the ebookstore, and perhaps a dictionary. The Mobipocket reader supports annotation (add bookmark, highlight, add note), search, and look up word in a dictionary.

Every ebook device has its pros and cons. The Blackberry as an ebook reading device is quite appropriate if one does not use it for a prolonged period of time as small fonts can cause eye strain and bigger fonts means more page turning. But it's extremely convenient to carry and fits in a pocket! And because I always have it around, I tend to reach out to it as and when I want to read something. It turns on in an instant and does not look out of place whether I'm reading on it in a bus, on the train, and even while waiting in a restaurant.

Reading eBooks On Blackberry Curve 8320

BlackBerry 8320 Curve Titanium Phone (Unlocked)

After a week of research and visiting the various stores to look at many smartphones and Blackberry devices, I finally settled for the Blackberry Curve 8320. This device weighs only 115g, is slim enough to fit into a shirt pocket, but most of all, has wi-fi! Another advantage is that the device charges as I connect it to the USB while synchronizing. It's convenient when I travel. The camera behind is a nice added feature.
Although it will take another few more days before the device can be activated by my service provider, I am already using it to read Gmail! But most of all, after installing the Blackberry desktop, I was able to download the Mobipocket Reader to my PC, synchronized my Blackberry to my Mobipocket library, and the ebooks are transfered to my Blackberry for reading - all in a matter of few minutes!
I was thrilled to find that the font size could be changed. For me, size 19 in bold feels comfortable on the eye. With this sized font, the average page holds about 4 words across with 9 lines down. I tried size 18 font and is able to get about 5-6 words across and 9 lines down. Both settings are good.
With a 1G Mini SD in the device, I can store many ebooks. So far, if reading on mobile devices, my choice is still the Mobipocket reader. It's very easy to use.
